Yesterday, I went to our new ALDI and was waiting in line at the checkout while my 8-year-old twins were acting like they’d never been to a grocery store before! It was a complete disaster… The sweet older man in front of me asked if they were my kids. I hesitated to admit it, but he told me I was doing a great job with them ❤️
I noticed he had lots of banana peppers, jalapeños, syrup, and sugar in his cart, and that was about it. I asked him what he was making with all that stuff. He told me he lost his wife last year and had started making salsa. He said he makes about 1,000 jars each summer and was stocking up on supplies because ALDI had the best prices. He checks the shopper regularly. He said the neighbors bring him tomatoes because he can’t keep up with his garden anymore. He also said he “dabbles” in jams! I told him he should sell it at the farmers market, but he said he does it just for fun. He enjoys it and it keeps him busy. He doesn’t sell it.
I thought about how everyone has been giving out roses and flowers, but I could hardly get my kids out of the store.
When I walked to my car, I noticed he was parked near me and called me over. I thought he needed help with his groceries, but no! He said, “I have something for you,” and gave me a jar of homemade salsa! I can’t remember the last time I was given something so special! He also told me where to find him this summer if I wanted more, and to bring the kids 💗
I thanked him, shook his hand, and this encounter really meant a lot to me. I just lost my beloved grandfather in February.
I was fighting back tears when I left, and as he pulled out of the parking lot, I noticed a Korean War Veteran sticker on his car. A true hero.
