Yesterday, during my Daddy’s funeral procession led by the United States Marine Corps, something happened that touched my heart in a way I will never forget. As we were driving, my family noticed a man who had pulled over on the side of the road. He stood there with his hat in his hand and his other hand over his heart, honoring my father and our family as we passed by.

In that moment, his simple act of respect meant more than words can say. We passed many cars along the way, but most people just kept going about their day. This man chose differently. His kindness moved not only my family but also everyone in the procession.

Later, because his license plate showed in a photo, my daughter did a little searching and we were able to find him. His name is Ernest Boerlin and he is a proud veteran of the United States Navy. When I reached out to thank him, this was his reply:

“It was an honor to show my respect for a fellow serviceman and their family. Please accept my prayers and condolences to you and your family for your loss. Fair winds and following seas. God bless.”

I cannot tell you how much those words and his actions meant to us. Thank you, Ernest, from the bottom of our hearts. You reminded us of the power of respect, honor and compassion in the middle of our grief. May God bless you and your family always.

Friends, let’s take a moment to thank Ernest for his service and to show him some love.
