Soon the reality of her illness became undeniable—the tips of her little fingers fell away, a sight no parent should ever face. And yet, instead of kindness, I was met with ignorance. A grandmother looked at me and asked, “Why didn’t you put sunscreen on her?” The suggestion stung as much as her words, as though something so complex could be dismissed so simply.
