Ruby, a 1-year-old golden retriever, was surrendered to SPCA Roussillon in Québec, Canada, during summer 2024. Despite her difficult circumstances, Ruby’s sunny personality and connection to people caught the attention of shelter workers.

Recognizing her potential, the shelter partnered with the Asista Foundation, which trains rescue dogs as service animals for individuals with mental health challenges.

NHL Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki and his fiancée Caitlin Fitzgerald, who volunteer with Asista, initially fostered Ruby for “a few days.” Those days quickly turned into something more permanent and the couple adopted Ruby.

Ruby is now training for Asista’s new mobile Facility Service Dog Program. In this role, she’ll work with Fitzgerald, a social worker, traveling to various locations to help de-escalate crises for children and adults with mental health needs.
