My husband has been in and out of the ICU since the beginning of January, facing more health struggles than I can count. This past Monday the doctors had to amputate his leg just below the knee. By Friday he was released to come home, and we were thankful but also a little nervous.

The moment we got home reality hit hard. He didn’t have the strength or balance he thought he would. The crutches were impossible for him to manage and I couldn’t get him up the steps in the wheelchair by myself. At one point he ended up sitting on the concrete steps and even with his mother’s help we just could not get him inside. My heart sank because I didn’t know what to do next.

Then something incredible happened. A stranger driving by slowed down, turned around, and pulled into our yard. He asked if we needed help and without hesitation lifted my husband off those steps and carried him into the house. We were already overwhelmed with gratitude, but that was only the beginning.

The very next morning he showed up again, this time with his father, and asked if he could build a ramp for us. In less than twenty four hours this man helped us twice in ways we will never forget. His kindness was like a breath of fresh air in the middle of one of our hardest weeks.

This stranger is now a friend. His name is Steven Smith. We will never be able to thank him enough and I truly believe God placed him in our path at the exact moment we needed him most.
