My husband has been in and out of the ICU since early January, dealing with many health problems. This past Monday, doctors had to amputate his leg just below the knee. We were glad—and honestly surprised—when they let him come home on Friday. But when we got home, things got tough. He didn’t have the strength or balance he hoped for, and he couldn’t use the crutches to get up the steps. I couldn’t lift him in the wheelchair either. At one point, he ended up on the concrete steps outside, and even with his mother helping, we just couldn’t get him up.

That’s when something amazing happened. A stranger drove by, slowed down, and turned around to come back. He pulled into our yard and asked if we needed help. This kind man picked my husband up off the steps and carried him into the house. We were overwhelmed with emotion and so thankful for his help. But he didn’t stop there.

The very next morning, he came back with his dad and asked if he could build a ramp for us. This stranger helped us not once, but twice in less than 24 hours. He brought light into our home during a dark time, and gave us hope again. His kindness was like a fresh breeze we didn’t know we needed.

This stranger is now our friend. His name is Steven Smith. We can’t thank him enough, and we thank God for sending him to us right when we needed someone most.
