My heart was warmed at Wal-Mart today during lunch.

A man in front of me had his items scanned and received the total. He looked back at me apologetically as he pulled handfuls of coins from his pockets. He miscounted, grew flustered, and whispered, “I’m so sorry,” his hands and voice shaking.

Without missing a beat, the cashier gently took his hands, poured the change onto the counter, and said, “This is not a problem, honey. We’ll do this together.”

Even as he continued to apologize, she calmly reassured him until the transaction was finished and he slowly shuffled away.

I looked at her and said, “Thank you for being so patient with him.”
She shook her head and replied, “You shouldn’t have to thank me, baby. What’s wrong with our world is we’ve forgotten how to love one another.”

I left wanting to be more like her.
