My grandparents built a brand new home in 1962 and this dining room set was delivered shortly after they moved in. My mom was 12. My aunt (my mom’s slightly older sister) was 13. I was born five years later, in 1967. By 1986 both of my grandparents had passed and this house was sold. The dining room set was left behind. Last year the house came up for sale. The seller was a now elderly woman who had purchased the home from my grandmother’s estate nearly 40 years earlier. Guess what? The dining room set was still there in pristine condition with the matching buffet as well. I went to the open house and told the realtor who I was and that I’d like to buy the set. A day later she told me the seller was happy to let me have it for free as long as I could move it before the new buyers closed. 15 mos later I’m in the process of getting it set up in my new place (itself a mid century high rise in the NJ burbs in immaculate condition about 1000 feet away from the homestead in question). Step at a time. Still moving in with stuff all over the place but I had to share.
