Indore, a city in Madhya Pradesh, India, was once filled with the stench of trash.

In 2017, the city implemented a comprehensive waste management system where all household waste is properly segregated. Garbage vans announce their arrival with a special jingle, and GPS tracking ensures they complete their routes. The collected waste becomes fuel and compost rather than ending up in dumps.

What truly sets Indore apart is how residents have embraced cleanliness as a personal responsibility. Through awareness campaigns, competitions, and community involvement, the city has created a culture where picking up litter is normal and civic pride flourishes.

“I’ve seen people stopping someone who littered. I’ve seen drivers stop their car when they see rubbish on the street to remove it. It’s become a kind of mission that inspires everyone,” Prabhnit Sawhney, a petrol pump owner, commented.

That is how Indore has maintained its status as India’s cleanest city for eight straight years.
