I was devastated when the veterinarian informed me that Mason, my ten-year best friend, had been diagnosed with a serious illness. I wanted to give him one last ideal day even though I knew we didn’t have much time. I put a post online in the hopes that someone nearby would let us use their pool because Mason has always loved the water. I was rendered speechless by what transpired next.

Messages from strangers offering their pools, lakeside docks, and even beach cottages began to pour in after one neighbor replied, followed by another. Treats were left on our porch by someone. Others simply offered prayers and kind words. What I had assumed would be a quiet farewell became something genuinely lovely. Mason spent his last swim in a tennis-ball-filled, love-filled backyard pool. The water was soft, and the sun was warm. Adults knelt to give him hugs, children came to greet him, and his tail waggled the entire time. He then snacked on peanut butter and grilled chicken while lying in his favorite blanket.

A few days later, he passed away, but not before serving as a reminder to all of us of the profound impact animals have on our lives and the reciprocal compassion of people. Mason departed from this life with peace, joy, and kindness. And even though I will always miss him, I will always remember that. 🐶💧❤️
