I want to share a story about one of the 6th graders on my bus that completely filled my heart this week.
Last week he mentioned that his elderly neighbor hadn’t left her house in weeks. I told him sometimes it can be really hard for someone older to manage daily tasks. A few days later, when I pulled up to his stop, he wasn’t there waiting. I looked over and saw him shoveling her porch. Since I was ahead of schedule, I decided to wait.
The other kids asked why we weren’t leaving and I told them, “Anyone helping someone deserves a few extra minutes.” That small moment changed everything. The kids started asking him questions about his neighbor, and the very next day seven children got on the bus with blankets, food, and handmade cards for her. After my route, I delivered those gifts, and the smile on her face said it all.
Now, every morning, she comes out to her porch and waves to the bus. And every child waves back.
I could not be prouder of that young man for setting such a powerful example. He showed his classmates that kindness is contagious, and now all of us get to start our mornings with a little more love in our hearts. ❤
