“I couldn’t stop talking about Emmanuel and even pulled out my phone to show a picture. Then my friend asked, ‘Is he poor? Does he live in a mud hut?’ I was completely taken aback. It never crossed my mind that she wouldn’t be as accepting as I was. I left soon after and never returned.”
