A Difficult Decision at Chicago Animal Care & Control
Chicago Animal Care & Control has made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize Topper, an eight-year-old dog who endured an extraordinary series of events throughout his life.
Topper’s life took a devastating turn when he was found wandering alone on the roof of a building, struggling to survive after enduring unimaginable loss. Four members of his family had tragically passed away, including one by suicide, leaving Topper completely on his own.
A Dramatic Rescue That Captured Hearts
Rescuers used a crane to safely lift Topper from the crumbling rooftop, a moment that drew widespread media attention. For months, he had remained the sole guardian of a decaying home filled with memories of the family he had lost.
In a single moment, Topper’s world collapsed. Yet through his pain, he revealed a sweet, gentle, and affectionate nature. Despite his sorrow, Topper continued to greet the world with quiet grace and trust.

A Shelter Filled with Compassion, and Overcrowding
During his six months at Chicago Animal Care & Control, Topper experienced deep care and affection from the shelter’s dedicated staff. He loved cuddles and formed a strong bond with one of his volunteer caregivers. However, the shelter is currently operating at full capacity, and more foster families and adopters are urgently needed to help other animals in need.

What Topper Needed Most: A Forever Home
Topper was known for his calm and curious personality. He delighted in agility play, food puzzles, and every chance to explore with enthusiasm. Shelter officials advised that he would thrive best as the only dog in a peaceful home.
Love had finally found its way back into Topper’s heart. All he needed was a forever family to make that love last. Sadly, time was not on his side.

A Call to Action: Share and Save Lives
Chicago Animal Care & Control encourages the public to share Topper’s story, through social media, with friends, family, and rescue groups. Every share helps raise awareness and could mean the difference between life and death for other animals still waiting for homes.
