“For the last 9 months, my wife, Brooklyn, has been pregnant with a baby boy who has been very sick. About 3 or 4 months ago, we found out that the baby had severe hydrocephalus, which is when there is too much fluid on the brain. They used to call it ‘water on the brain’ in the past.
We were referred to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where some of the best doctors in the country told us that his condition was very bad. They said it was so extreme that they stopped measuring the fluid levels because it didn’t matter anymore. The MRIs were hard to look at.
The doctors told us there was more than a 90% chance that the baby would either die shortly after birth or have such serious brain problems that he wouldn’t have a good quality of life. We even had a meeting with palliative care to talk about when we might need to stop life support and let the baby pass away peacefully. It was a very emotional conversation.
Brooklyn moved to Cincinnati and stayed in a hotel near the hospital just in case she went into labor. I drove back and forth. On July 8th, Brooklyn went into labor. Right before they were about to start the C-section, we had another meeting with the doctors about when we might need to take out the breathing tube. But then, the baby was born crying! That was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.
In short, little Charlie stayed in the infant ICU until yesterday when we were able to bring him home. He’s a normal, beautiful baby who’s doing all the things babies do. He does have mild ventricular enlargement, but we can manage that with checkups.
How did this happen?
The doctors said, ‘We don’t have an explanation for what happened.’ Somehow, his brain found a way to clear the blockage and reroute the fluid that had been causing the problem. In the last week, I heard the words ‘miracle’ and ‘divine intervention’ more times than I can count. Doctors with years of experience and nurses were amazed and so happy. Because of all the people praying for us—family, friends, clients, even strangers—I truly believe there were thousands of people praying for us.
I’m a practical person who believes in science and medicine, but I know, deep in my heart, that God was involved in this. I give all the credit to Him. Prayer is powerful. God is real, and He still works miracles.”
