Every morning without fail, Benny grabs this one slipper and guards it like it’s made of gold.
It started as a joke — one morning I caught him dragging it across the floor with his whole body wobbling behind it. I laughed, took a picture, and thought that was it. But the next day? He did it again. And again the day after. Eventually, I just gave up and let that slipper be “his.”
What’s wild is, he doesn’t chew it. Doesn’t tear it up or toss it around. He just holds it. Wraps his little arms around it, rests his chin on it, and stares off like he’s deep in thought. I used to think it was just a comfort thing — like a kid with a blankie — but the more I watched him, the more I realized… this is love. Pure, simple love.
There was this one day I came home after a really tough night. I’d lost someone close, and my whole chest just felt hollow. I sat down on the rug without saying a word, and before I could even take off my shoes, Benny walked over with that slipper and gently placed it on my lap. Like he was giving me his most prized thing because he could feel I needed comfort more than he did.
Man, I don’t care what anyone says — dogs know. They know. And somehow, without a single word, they say exactly what you need to hear.
