After a grueling day at work, all I wanted was a large pepperoni pizza and my couch. My hands were still greasy when I pulled into the parking lot of Salerno’s. That’s when I noticed an elderly gentleman struggling to climb the curb with a metal cane that clinked with every step.
People bustling by didn’t seem to notice him, focused on their takeout bags. Something made me pause—a mix of empathy and instinct. I rolled down my window and asked gently, “Need some help?”
His surprised smile said it all. I parked quickly and went over, offering my arm. He gripped it firmly as we moved slowly forward. His big, clunky orthopedic shoes reminded me of my dad’s, sparking a bittersweet memory of him fumbling with a jar in the kitchen—pretending not to need help.
When we entered, the hostess greeted the gentleman warmly, as if they were old friends. It was a small moment, but it reminded me how a little kindness can brighten someone’s day.
