Mother Lurcher Found Chained With Newborn Puppies in Cold Field, All Now Safe

A Disturbing Discovery in a Remote Field

In a cold, isolated field, a two-year-old lurcher was found tightly chained to a metal fence post, unable to move. Just beside her, her six newborn puppies, still too young to open their eyes, lay helpless, with no food, no water, and no shelter.

Despite her restraints, the devoted mother dog tried desperately to nurse and protect her litter.

Believed to Have Been Abandoned After Birth

Rescuers, speaking to the Daily Mail, said they believe the dogs were abandoned shortly after the puppies were born. It is unclear exactly how long the mother and her litter were left there, exposed to the cold and vulnerable to starvation.

Immediate Rescue and Veterinary Care

All seven dogs were urgently transported to the ISPCA’s National Animal Centre in County Longford. There, they received medical attention, warmth, and proper nutrition after their horrifying ordeal.

Remarkably, despite being left in harsh conditions, both the mother and her puppies were found to be in good health.

A Fresh Start for the Puppies

The six puppies, now named Billy Ray, Dixie, Dolly, Dotty, June, and Patsy, will stay under ISPCA care until they are old enough to be rehomed. Their mother will also continue receiving care and monitoring as she regains strength.

A Call for Responsible Pet Ownership

The ISPCA used the case to highlight the ongoing issue of animal abandonment and the overwhelming number of unwanted litters. The organization continues to urge the public to spay and neuter their pets, helping prevent suffering and reduce the number of animals left to die in similar circumstances.

The rescued family’s story is a reminder that compassion, combined with swift action, can dramatically change lives.
