A Horrifying Discovery on an Oahu Beach
Earlier this year, a shocking incident unfolded on a beach in Oahu, Hawaii. A bystander witnessed a man using a machete while attempting to bury a dog alive. Acting quickly, the witness contacted PAWS of Hawaii, and their rescue team rushed to the scene.
The dog – later named Leialoha – was found in dire condition. Severely sunburned, covered in sores, and missing patches of fur, she also had visible injuries on her legs. Rescuers immediately transported her to Aloha Affordable Veterinary Services for urgent medical care.

A Foster Family With a Heart for Rescue
Amanda Krasniewski and her husband were already experienced dog fosters. Their journey into animal rescue began years earlier during a trip to St. Croix, where they encountered a local shelter promoting adoption. Inspired by the mission, they adopted their first dog, Mocha, and later a stray Chow mix named Bruce.
When they moved to Hawaii, they continued their passion for animal welfare by fostering dogs through PAWS of Hawaii. By the time they learned about Leialoha, they had already fostered 12 others.
Touched by the dog’s heartbreaking story, Amanda immediately volunteered to take her in.

The First Night: Pain, Fear, and Uncertainty
Leialoha’s first night in foster care was difficult. “She had a strong odor from being buried, and her skin was in terrible shape”, Amanda recalled.

Swollen, red, and weak, Leialoha could barely move. When Amanda tried gently lifting her from the travel kennel, the dog cried in pain. Amanda feared she might not survive the night.

A Glimmer of Hope
The next morning, Amanda visited her, and Leialoha wagged her tail.
That tiny gesture changed everything.
Though exhausted and underweight, she showed she was ready to fight for her life. Initially timid, she only left her kennel to relieve herself. Amanda and her husband spent hours sitting with her, offering comfort and quiet companionship.
Eventually, they encouraged her to move from her crate to resting under the coffee table, a small but important step in her journey.

A Remarkable Transformation
Within two weeks, Leialoha’s progress was stunning. She began to trust her new family, engaged in play with their other dog, fetched toys with Amanda’s husband, and snuggled during naps with Amanda.
Her personality blossomed. The once-fragile dog filled the home with energy, affection, and playful spirit.

A Twist of Fate Leads to Adoption
Originally, Leialoha was meant to be adopted by a family on the Big Island. However, due to an illness among their pets, the adoption fell through. Meanwhile, a news story about her rescue gained widespread attention while Amanda’s family was on vacation.
When they returned home, Amanda’s husband realized how deeply he had bonded with Leialoha. The couple decided that she belonged with them, not because of her fame, but because she had already become family.

A New Life Filled With Love
Today, Leialoha is thriving. “She’s full of energy, loves to play all day, and isn’t shy about demanding attention”, Amanda shared. Despite her traumatic past, Leialoha has grown into a trusting, affectionate, and joyful dog.
Her journey from the brink of death to a life full of love is a powerful reminder of the healing power of compassion.
