I want to share a story about one of my coworkers that truly restored my faith in people. She travels from North Carolina to New York every single month for her cancer treatments. A few months ago, on her way home from New York, her car broke down about an hour outside of Wilmington.
It was a Sunday afternoon in a small town, and roadside assistance couldn’t find a single tow truck open. They told her to call 911. That’s when Trooper Garganus showed up and turned what could have been a nightmare into an unforgettable act of kindness.
He filled her car with water and followed her for five miles to a gas station, only for the pump to run dry again. So he filled it once more and then noticed the overflow connection was cracked. Instead of giving up, he actually crafted a temporary part by hand so the coolant pump could hold just long enough for her to reach Wilmington.
Her phone had died, but Trooper Garganus didn’t stop there. He let her charge it in his car, and even gave her a brand new portable charger of his own so she would have a backup if anything happened again. He didn’t just leave after that. He drove behind her for another twenty miles, making sure she was safe. He stayed by her side for more than an hour and a half, never once acting like she was an inconvenience.
What an incredible reminder that there are still people in this world who will go out of their way to help a stranger in need. Thank you Trooper Garganus for showing what true compassion and service look like.
