Chess Grandmaster Anna Muzychuk once made a decision that cost her two world titles—and she did it willingly.
She explained it in her own words:
“In a few days, I will lose two world titles, one after another. Why? Because I decided not to go to Saudi Arabia. I don’t want to live under special rules. I don’t want to wear an abaya. I don’t want to need a man’s permission just to leave my hotel room. I don’t want to feel like I am less than others.
I chose to keep my principles, even if it means not playing in the World Rapid and Blitz Championship. In just five days, I could have earned more money than in many tournaments combined. But I walked away.
It feels very unfair, and the saddest part is that almost nobody seems to care. It hurts, but I cannot go back on my decision.”
Anna lost her titles, but she kept her dignity. And in the end, that made her victory far greater than any trophy.
True courage is standing up for what’s right—even when it costs you everything. ♟️❤️
