From Boris’s rare photo collection: here’s 13-year-old George Harrison with his pen-pal Jenny Brewer at Sandy Bay Holiday Camp, Exmouth, in the summer of 1956.
George was already falling in love with popular music. He asked Jenny if she had heard Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel.” Jenny shook her head.
“Who?” she asked.
“Elvis! Elvis Presley!” George replied, eyes shining. “That’s the real one.”
They had first met the summer before when their families camped at the same spot. They became pen-pals and kept their friendship alive long after, even as George’s life changed from seaside holidays to the heights of Beatlemania.
Every legend starts somewhere—and for George Harrison, it began with a holiday camp, a pen-pal, and the sound of Elvis echoing through a young boy’s heart.
