Years ago, I learned something about Robin Williams that changed the way I saw him forever.
I never booked him for an event, but I came close enough that his team sent over his rider—the list of personal and technical requirements performers give to event organizers. Riders usually tell you a lot about someone. Sometimes they’re quirky (like the rock bands who famously ask for bowls of only green M&Ms). Other times they reveal contradictions (like environmentalists who demand private jets but insist on electric cars once they’re in public view).
But Robin’s rider had something different. Something unforgettable.
He required that, for every film or event he worked on, the hiring company also had to employ a certain number of homeless people and give them jobs.
I never watched one of his movies the same way again.
It wasn’t just that he was generous with his own money or time—though I’m sure he was. He also used his influence to push entire companies to give people in need the dignity of work. Think about how many lives were touched, how many people earned an income and a little hope, simply because Robin Williams insisted on it.
He multiplied his kindness.
That’s a legacy as meaningful as the laughter he gave us. Thank you, Robin Williams—not just for the joy, but for the example. ❤️
