Ron Howard and his 1970 Volkswagen Bug have a story that feels like something straight out of a movie. At just 16 years old, he bought the car brand new—it was his very first set of wheels. He drove it faithfully until around 1976 before finally letting it go.
Decades later, fate stepped in. His brother-in-law stumbled upon the very same car in Redding, California, where Howard has family ties. To his surprise, it was still rolling, being used to deliver eggs, and even had Ron’s old college sticker on it.
Wanting to bring the story full circle, his brother-in-law bought the car back, replaced the engine, and had it shipped to Ron. Today, he still drives it proudly, calling it the only car he’s ever truly loved. He credits his father for giving him the wisdom as a young teen with money in his pocket to choose something practical like a Volkswagen instead of a flashy Corvette.
Sometimes the best love stories aren’t with people—they’re with the cars that carried us through the chapters of our lives.
