My heart was touched at Wal-Mart today during lunch.

An older gentleman had his items scanned and was told his total. He turned to me with an apologetic look and began pulling handfuls of change from his pockets. His hands were trembling as he tried to count, his voice shaky as he whispered, “I’m so sorry.”

Before he could get too flustered, the cashier gently took his hands, poured the change onto the counter, and smiled, “This is not a problem, honey. We’ll do this together.”

He kept apologizing as both of us reassured him it was fine. Once everything was counted and his transaction was finished, he quietly shuffled away.

I looked at this beautiful cashier and said, “Thank you for being so patient with him.”

She shook her head and replied, “Baby, you shouldn’t have to thank me. What’s wrong with our world is we’ve forgotten how to love one another.”

Her words hit me straight in the heart. I want to be more like her.
