On May 13, 1943, in the Dutch city of Groningen, a baby girl named Sara Cohen was born. She weighed just six pounds and four ounces, and was the daughter of Carolina and Joseph Cohen.
Sara never met her father—he had been deported to a concentration camp a month before she was born. Her mother was left alone to care for little Sara and her two other children, who were also toddlers.
The family lived at J. C. Kapteynlaan 7b, but their home could not keep them safe.
On February 8, 1944, Carolina and her three children were deported to the Westerbork transit camp. From there, they were sent to Auschwitz. Soon after their arrival, all three children, including baby Sara, were taken to the gas chambers.
Sara Cohen was only eight months old.
Today, we honor her—not as a number, but as a child who deserved to live, laugh, and grow. May her memory be a blessing.
