This morning, my sixteen-year-old grandson showed up at my doorstep with a bag, looking like the life had just been knocked out of him. He lives two states away and traveled by bus to get here. Why? Because my daughter—his mother—decided that the best way to handle him coming out of the closet was to kick him out of her house.
I called her, hoping there had been some kind of mistake. Instead, she told me she didn’t want him back and said things so cruel I can’t even bring myself to type them here. I honestly thought I raised her better than this. I’m angry beyond words, but more than anything, I’m heartbroken for my grandson.
He’s sleeping in his new bedroom now. He doesn’t want to go back, and she doesn’t want him back. I’m absolutely fine with having him here, but I won’t lie—it’s overwhelming trying to figure out the best way to help him heal and move forward. His entire world has been turned upside down.
Here’s where we are now:
• My grandson is in therapy and has been enrolled at a new school.
• CPS has placed him in my custody while things proceed.
• My lawyer is handling the paperwork and says we have nothing to worry about.
• My daughter is facing criminal charges—child abandonment is serious, and her actions have consequences. When she realized she’d lose financial support and face legal trouble, she tried to claim it was a “heat of the moment” decision. But after she threw away all of his belongings, no one believed that excuse—not even my grandson.
As for him? He’s doing as well as can be expected. He’s made friends with the neighbor’s kids, and we redecorated his room together. He got to pick out his own furniture and paint, and it gave him a sense of control over something in his life. He now has a PS4, which has been his escape when he needs it. He’s chosen not to join any school groups right now, and I’m respecting that choice.
We’re even talking about getting a puppy—he’s always loved dogs, but his mom never let him have one.
It’s been a hard road, but he’s safe now. And little by little, I think he’s beginning to believe that he’s home. ❤️
