An old beggar couple appeared at their prosperous son’s wedding; all through the celebration, they stood shaking, never invited to sit… until something sh0cking occurred.
My husband, a gentle young man employed as an office clerk, always convinced me I had found my true partner. He often said he didn’t want a big ceremony because “there was nobody in his family to invite.” I accepted that, though my parents dreamed of hosting a grand wedding for their only daughter.
Eventually, we selected a stylish restaurant and invited nearly 100 guests, mostly relatives and friends from my family’s side.
When the big day arrived: dazzling chandeliers, fragrant blossoms, guests laughing and chatting joyfully. My husband and I walked onto the stage, exchanged our rings, and pledged a shared life.
Yet, within the crowd, my eyes caught a startling image: an elderly pair, clothed in worn garments, lingered at the back of the hall. The frail, silver-haired man leaned on a bamboo staff, trembling. The woman with him held a faded cloth sack, her mournful eyes fixed on us.
They seemed utterly misplaced in such grandeur, like two lost shadows. So I whispered to my husband softly:
“Darling, who are those two old people? Why are they standing there?”
He stiffened briefly, then answered quickly:
“Most likely beggars sneaking in. I’ll ask the servers to send them away.”
