This little stray kitten showed up crying in my backyard two weeks ago, begging to come inside. I already have three cats, and my spouse drew the line at four, so I left him outside while I looked for his owners. No one ever came forward.

A couple of days ago, I noticed him limping and howling. After calling at least ten clinics (all booked for weeks), I finally rushed him to an emergency vet. $600 later, the diagnosis: a snake bite. Luckily, not venomous — but he was in so much pain.

I brought him inside to recover (which my spouse and my other cats were not thrilled about). Then this morning… worms. He vomited them everywhere. The clinic I’d gone to was closed, and every other one I called either didn’t answer or required an appointment. After driving around town, I finally found another emergency clinic. Another $400 later, he had dewormer, vaccines, and tests to make sure he’s not a danger to my indoor cats.

So here I am — over $1000 in vet bills for a cat that technically isn’t even mine. But what can I say? The things I do for cats. At this point, I’m pretty sure I’m on my way to full Crazy Cat Lady status.
