I met my ex-husband when I was just 19 and married him six months later. He wanted me to stay in the kitchen and be pregnant while he worked. Everything seemed fine until it wasn’t. After having four kids and realizing I was being betrayed, I promised myself I would find a way out one day.
My ex often said, “Where are you going with four kids and a high school education?” I knew he had a point, but I also knew I needed to leave. So, I got to work on a plan. I enrolled in junior college and faced challenges with basic subjects like algebra and English. One of my professors even made fun of me for writing “with in” as two separate words in one of my essays.
I refused to give up and woke up at 4 AM to study while everyone else was still asleep. Finally, I found the opportunity and courage to get a divorce. My kids and I studied together every night after dinner in our new home. As my confidence grew, I kept pushing myself and earned a B.S. in Psychology. Six years later, I completed my Master’s degree in Social Work, and now I work for the government.
It’s been 24 years since I found the courage to leave. I just bought my dream car and parked it in my driveway. I thought to myself, “Whose life is this???” Wow, I actually did that!
