David was 13 and in the self-contained class at Thompson Sixth Grade Center, where I worked as a paraprofessional. Though I wasn’t assigned to his class, I often joined them at recess. One Friday, a coach told me David was about to be listed on an adoption site. Instinctively, I said, ‘We’ll adopt him.’ That moment changed everything — I realized we could be the family he needed.”
