Latonya Young drove Uber at night to care for her three children. She is a 44-year-old single mom from Atlanta, Georgia. One night after a soccer game in 2018, she met a passenger named Kevin Esch. They chatted and she shared that she had left college at Georgia State years earlier because she owed just $693. She couldn’t afford it. She dreamed of going back to school and becoming the first in her family to graduate. Kevin listened and encouraged her to try again.
A few weeks later, Kevin quietly paid off her $693 debt so she could go back. He did it without telling her in advance. Latonya burst into tears when the school called to say she was cleared to register. She couldn’t believe that a stranger cared so deeply about her dream. It gave her hope at just the right time.
Latonya finished college and earned her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice on May 6, 2021. Kevin proudly cheered from the crowd, and Latonya said their friendship has inspired her to help others.
