Just saw the Crochet Coral Reef in person, almost cried. I don’t even know which flair to use here, I hope this kind of content is allowed. But it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen and I don’t have any irl crochet friends to share this with. This crochet coral reef is an exhibition in the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg (Germany). It’s part of the larger Crochet Coral Reef project by Margaret and Christine Wertheim. I’ve wanted to see this exhibit for ages and it finally came close enough to me that I could go and see it. I still had to drive 6 hours (roundtrip) but it was so worth it! The dedication and craftsmanship is overwhelming. Hundreds of people were involved in making this, their names take up an entire wall even though some are listed as groups (“School X, grade 2 to 4” or “Knitting Circle Village X”). They used so many different materials, from different yarns to ribbons and even recycled plastic bags I think? They also incorporated zip ties and bottle caps. Tbh I probably still missed a lot of things. The longer you look, the more you find. If you are in the area, or in Baden Baden (where the exhibit is usually housed), or in any other city with a crochet coral reef, I can only recommend you go check it out in person! I want to start my own reef now, it’s a stash buster project for sure
(sorry all my pictures are so blurry, I was too excited to take pictures calmly)
