My mom was in her eighties and suffering from severe Parkinson’s disease when she came to live with me. At that point, she felt like her life was over, convinced that she was no longer good for anything. It broke my heart to see her in such despair. Determined to help her regain a sense of purpose and joy, I took her to a doctor who was able to get her Parkinson’s under control. This was a turning point for her, and I could see a spark of hope return.
To channel that newfound energy, I handed her some white quilt squares and told her we were going to make a quilt together. It was a simple idea, but it meant so much. She poured her heart into each square, hand-embroidering beautiful flowers onto the fabric. Watching her creativity bloom again was a joy. She was so proud of her work, and I could see her spirits lift with every stitch.
Before she passed away, she was able to see the beginnings of the quilt, and it brought her such happiness. After she was gone, I finished the quilt, carefully hand quilting it with love and memories woven into every seam. This quilt became a lasting tribute to her strength and creativity, a reminder of the beautiful moments we shared during that time. It’s not just a piece of fabric; it’s a piece of her legacy, something I will cherish forever.
