Crochet has been utterly dominant for the Red Sox in one of their few bright spots during a disappointing season.
Crochet is among the Cy Young favorites in the American League, coming in with a 1.98 ERA and a 5-4 record, along with 101 strikeouts in just 82 innings pitched.
He’s been superb for a disappointing Red Sox team that has a team total ERA of 4.06 (11th-worst in baseball).
Whether Crochet can actually help the Red Sox snag a win Saturday will likely depend on how deep he can pitch into the game.
Fangraphs projected that the Red Sox had been a bit unlucky to be sitting at 30-34 through 64 games entering Friday — and they’re now 30-35 after a 9-6 loss in The Bronx — but they also weren’t expecting a big change for the last 98 games, as they projected Boston to go 49-49 the rest of the way.
A 79-83 record is not what manager Alex Cora was expecting coming into this season after they landed difference-making pitcher Crochet, along with Walker Buehler and third baseman Alex Bregman.
Entering Friday, the Red Sox averaged 4.73 runs per game, the sixth-best mark in all of baseball, but were alloweing 4.53 per game, which ranked eighth-worst.

They should win just about every time Crochet takes the ball, but they are just 7-6 in his starts this season.
